the introduction of foreign, injurious pests. Once foreign pests
havebecomeestablished,notonlyisitverydifficulttoeradicate
thembuttherearealsosubstantialcollateralenvironmentaland
economic implications. Therefore, in Korea, we are constantly
making everyeffort toprevent theintroductionof foreignpests
byconductingborderinspections.
Globalexpansionthroughprogramssuchasfreetradeagreements
(FTAs) has facilitated an increase in plant trade, concurrently
promoting the long-distance movement of immobile sucking
pests, such as scale insects and whiteflies, which are strongly
affixed to the plants on which they occur. Thus, to prevent the
introductionofharmfulinsects,diagnosticskillsareessentialfor
identifying and obtaining information on the pests of imported
plantsinarapidandeasymanner.
Researchersandinspectorsengaginginplantquarantinerequire
detailedinformationonthearmoredscalespeciesthatarefound
on imported plants. To aid this, QIA has produced this identi-
ficationguide,whichnotonlyprovideskeysfortheseinsectsbut
also provides photographs of them and outlines their defining
characters.
I hope that this identification guide will be informative for
those who are interested in studying armored scales, and I am
