Countriesaroundtheworldarecurrentlyseeingtheincreaseintradeand
people-to-peopleexchangesmorethaneverbefore.ConclusionofmoreFTAs
hasabolishedtariffbarriersbetweencountriesandtheworldhasbeendivided
intoseveralmassiveeconomicblocs,acceleratingthetradewithintheblocs.In
addition,climatechangesuchasglobalwarminghasincreasedtheemergenceof
exoticdiseasesandpestswhichhaveneverbeenidentifiedbeforeandthefrequent
occurrencesofanimaldiseasesandplantpestsinneighboringcountrieshaveputKoreaonhighalert.
Againstthisbackdrop,allKoreansshouldworktogetherbasedonthesharedrecognitionofthecurrent
situationandtheKoreangovernmentshouldcooperatewithothercountriestojointlyaddresstherisks
inordertoachievea‘Disease-freeKoreaofHappyPeople’.In2014,theAnimalandPlantQuarantine
Agency(QIA)achievedremarkableresultsinvariousfields,includinganimaldiseasecontrol,animals/
livestockproductsandplantquarantine,managementof veterinarymedicinalproducts,animal
protectionandwelfare,veterinaryscienceandplantquarantineR&D;andwonthePresidentialPrizeina
contestforimprovedciviladministrationservicehostedbytheMinistryofGovernmentAdministration
andHomeAffairs.
Theoutcomesachievedin2014byfieldareasfollows:Intheanimaldiseasecontrolfield,thedomestic
livestockindustrywashardhitbytheoutbreaksof HighlyPathogenicAvianInfluenzaandFoot-
