3. Monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in retail meats(domestic and imported)
A total of 380 E. coli, 105 S. aureus, 54 Enterococcus spp., 47 Salmonella spp., and 6
Campylobacter spp. were isolated to investigate antimicrobial resistance of food-borne
bacteria from 701 retail meats that were produced in Korea. For E. coli, resistance rate
for tetracycline, streptomycin, ampicillin and nalidixic acid were high. Generally, isolates
from beef meat had lower resistance rate than those from porks and chicken meats. S.
aureus isolates showed higher resistance rate to penicillin, but all isolates were found to
be susceptible to vancomycin, linezolid, rifampin etc. Enterococcus spp. isolates showed
high resistance to tetracycline and quinupristin/dalfopristin that was known as intrinsic
resistance byEnterococcus faecalis.Salmonella strains were isolated from chicken and duck
meat. They showed resistance to nalidixic acid.
To investigate antimicrobial resistance of bacteria, 294 strains of bacteria were isolated
(125E. coli, 130S. aureus, 24Enterococcus spp., 13Salmonella spp., and 2Campylobacter
spp.) from 531 imported meats. For E. coli, tetracycline, streptomycin and ampicillin
resistance was higher than those of the other antimicrobials. Isolates from beef meat had
lower resistance rate compared to those from pork and chicken meat. S. aureus isolates
showed high resistance rate to penicillin, erythromycin and tetracycline, but all isolates
were susceptible to vancomycin, linezolid, rifampin etc. Enterococcus spp. isolates showed
high resistance to quinupristin/dalfopristin that was known as intrinsic resistance by
Enterococcus faecalis.Salmonella isolates showed high resistance to tetracycline.
