Governments inWesternAustralia andSouth Australia announce newmeasures to halt
thespreadofdestructivepest.
Biosecurity officials in Western Australia and South Australia are taking two different
approachesinanefforttoeradicatethehighlydestructivefruitfly.?
InWesternAustralia,wherenewdetectionsoffruitflyhavebeenconfirmed,quarantine
zoneshavebeensetupinthePerthsuburbsofDalkeith,ClaremontandNedlands.
Surveillancehasbeenboostedandmorethan300luretrapshavebeenset,withorganic
insecticidealsoinuse.
Residents near areas where the pest has been detected have been asked to remove
anythingthatcanprovideabreedinggroundsuchascitrus,stonefruit,olives,tomatoes,
chilliesandcapsicums.
WesternAustraliaagricultureandfoodminister,AlannahMacTiernan,saidtheaimwas
toprotectthefruitandvegetableindustries,whichareworthabout$1bnayear.
"Weacknowledgethatmeasuressuchasremovingbackyardfruitandfruitingvegetables
willbetoughforresidentsinaffectedareas,butweneedtoactquicklyanddecisively
tominimisefurtherloss,"saidMacTiernan.
"Ifwedon'tundertakethesestrongmeasuresnowtoeradicatethispest,weplacefuture
production at risk - not only for our commercial growers but also for Perth residents
wantingtogrowfruitandfruitingvegetablesintheirgarden,”sheadded.
InSouthAustralia,whereover180Adelaidesuburbsarealreadyincludedinafruit-fly
outbreakorsuspensionarea,thestategovernmenthastakenthenextsteptoeradicate
thepest,byreleasingmillionsofsterileflies.
Primaryindustriesminister,TimWhetstone,saidoutbreaksacrossmetropolitanAdelaide
meanteverytoolpossiblewasneededtoeradicatethedevastatingpestinordertokeep
thestate’spest-freestatusin-tact.
“Ourpest-freestatusgivesourprimaryproducersamarketadvantagearoundtheworld
andenablesthemtogrowourfruitwithouttheneedforpesticidesandallowsittobe
exportedtomarketswithouttheneedforcostlytreatments,”saidWhetstone.
“The pest could have devastating impacts to our $1.3 billion fruit fly-vulnerable
horticultureindustry.
“For months now, we have had PIRSA staff on the ground in suburban hot spots,
battlingtheseflies,”headded.
