The family Aleyrodidae contains 158 genera and approximately 1,557 species. The
family consists of 4 subfamilies of whiteflies (Fig. 3): 3 extant (living) families (Aleu-
rodicinae, Aleyrodinae and Udamosellinae) and one fossil subfamily (Bernaeinae). The
subfamily Udamosellinae contains only 2 South American species, with adults of this
subfamilyhavingastigmaintheforewingsimilartothatofaphids.Theremainingspecies
ofwhitefliesareintheAleurodicinae(approximately8%ofallwhiteflyspecies,mostly
fromtheNeotropics)andAleyrodinae(approximately92%ofwhiteflyspeciesdistributed
worldwide)subfamilies.
