[¿µ¹®] I will elaborate some of these issues in the next slides. Several aspects play a role
when pigs are not healthy. These give partly hidden costs. Performance is quite clear:
lower daily gain, higher mortality or worse feed efficiency are observed easily, so
are health expenses (those 2.2% of the former slide). Also in case of an outbreak
of a contagious disease, it is clear that high costs occur, because of value loss, or
just because the farm is empty and not producing. Other aspects are less visible,
like management challenges (how to arrange everything in a suboptimal situation?)
and labourjoy. Impaired slaughter quality can lead to non-compliance of slaughter
pigs in some market programmes, or even condemnation (like in case of lameness,
if no transport to abattoir is allowed). And I didn¡¯t even put Sustainability issues
and Public opinion issues on the slide. But these are also important.
