methods.ThemillipedeisanintroducedpestinAustraliaandSouthAfrica,andknownto
colonise a variety of habitats. Attracted to lights, large numbers of the millipede tend to
invade homes, although once inside they do not breed and usually die. The millipede is
mainlydetritivorous andfeeds ondecomposing organicmatter. InAustralia, high millipede
numbers are known to occasionally feed on living plants such as seedlings of fruit and
vegetablecrops.However,largenumbersofmillipedesdonotnecessarilymeandamagewill
occur, and feeding damage on crops is relatively rare. No specific references to crop
damage were found from Tasmania, an area with a close climate match to New Zealand.
AlthoughimpactsonnativeNewZealandmillipedesareunknown,thereissuggestionthat
Portuguesemillipedeshavebecomethedominantspeciesinbushinsomelong-farmedparts
ofTasmania.
Management options are limited for this millipede, but light-traps, chemical and physical
barriers can curb populations. In Australia, biological control using the native Australian
nematode, Rhabditis necromena, appears to have resulted in declining numbers of
Portuguesemillipedes.TheimpactsofO.moreletiinNewZealandareunknownbutlikely
to be low. This investigation was transitioned to the RRS team to consider response
options in view of the millipede’s wide distribution. The response team is working to
understand future spread and impacts of O. moreleti. Potential options to minimise these
impactswillbeconsideredandcommunicatedtoaffectedstakeholders.
