[¿µ¹®] Biosecurity focuses on the prevention of entering diseases into a farm, or the external
biosecurity, and the spread of diseases within the farm, the so-called internal
biosecurity. External biosecurity measures have much been discussed (CSF, ASF).
Importance of internal biosecurity is a more recent insight, partially linked to the
struggle to reduce antimicrobial use. It is necessary to focus on an integrated
approach. E.g. an extensive vaccination program is not sufficient, if rodent control
were overlooked. It is often a matter of awareness of the farmer. But since farmers
tend to be blind for the own situation, external support is necessary. Then
benchmarking is very helpful: measuring the own management and performance, and
comparing it to others. Then lessons can be learnt for improving the own farm
management. However, culture does play a role here, since benchmarking is typically
a Western approach and less often found in Eastern Asia. I show two pictures, again
from South Korea, which I find striking. The first is a disinfection unit, found at
all HACCP certified farms in Korea. However, as a veterinarian told me, these are
neither used, nor effective. On the other hand, the truck shower facilities are found
everywhere, and might be effective on this specific infection risk, via trucks. I will
show some outcomes of the BioCheckBenchmarking tool. BioCheckis a validated,
risk-based, quantitative, online scoring system for internal and external biosecurity
