13. APHIS Seeks Comment on Draft Pest Risk Assessment for
Fresh Raspberry Fruit from Peru for Consumption into the
United States

The government of Peru has asked USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service (APHIS) to authorize importation of fresh raspberry fruit (Rubus idaeus,
R. neglectus, and R. occidentalis) for consumption into the United States. APHIS
has drafted a pest risk assessment that describes potential pests associated with
the commodity.
APHIS shares draft pest risk assessments to determine whether stakeholders
have information that might lead us to revise the draft assessment before we
identify pest mitigations and proceed with the commodity import approval
process.
The draft pest risk assessment for raspberry fruit for consumption from Peru will
be available for review and comment until July 29, 2020. To view the

Executive Summary The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) prepared this document to assess pest risks associated with
importing commercially-produced fresh fruit of raspberry, Rubus idaeus L., R. neglectus Peck, and
R. occidentalis L. (Rosaceae), for consumption from Peru into the United States. Using scientific
literature, port-of-entry pest interception data, and information from the government of Peru, we
developed a list of pests with quarantine significance for the United States that occur in Peru (on
any host) and are associated with the commodity plant species (anywhere in the world). The
following organisms are candidates for pest risk management because they met the threshold for
unacceptable consequences of introduction: Pest type Taxonomy Scientific name Likelihood of
Introduction overall rating Arthropod Diptera: Tephritidae Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) Medium
Detailed examination and choice of appropriate phytosanitary measures to mitigate pest risk are
addressed separately from this document.
