Preface
In October 2023, the first-ever cases of lumpy skin disease (LSD), which is a type I disease
stipulated in the Act on the Prevention of Contagious Animal Diseases, were confirmed in the
Republic of Korea. In response to this unprecedented epidemic, the Animal and Plant Quarantine
Agency (APQA) promptly and systematically implemented diagnoses, outbreak investigations, and
control measures in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) prepared beforehand.
In the process, 2,065 people in 931 teams were deployed to vaccinate all cattle raised nationwide
(93,944 farms, 4.075 million cattle), which was successfully completed in November 10, 2023, within
1 month from the first confirmed case. Along with the ¡°Pan-governmental special inspection
on the status of nationwide LSD Control¡± subsequently conducted from November 10 to 15, the
APQA continued to implement swift and effective LSD control measures.
The effective control of animal diseases relies on the information collected through on-site outbreak
investigations. Considering the relevance of such investigations, the role played by outbreak
investigation officers significantly influences the overall control process. In this regard, the APQA
decided to compile data on the clinical signs of LSD observed in the affected farms that were
reported by investigation officers during the first outbreak in South Korea into this book ¡ìOutbreak
Investigations for Clinical Signs of Lumpy Skin Disease in Korea in 2023¡í.
On behalf of the APQA, I would like to express my gratitude to the farmers and veterinarians
who cooperated with the outbreak investigations despite the challenging conditions. Furthermore,
I would like to extend my thank and support to the employees from the Veterinary Epidemiology
Division and the Centers for Animal Disease Control of the APQA who made dedicated efforts
in collecting field data and implementing control measures, as well as the employees from animal
health agencies across the country who willingly shared valuable data. This book is anticipated
to serve as a useful resource for conducting outbreak investigations on LSD and understanding
the clinical signs of the disease, thereby contributing to minimizing the damage caused by animal
disease outbreaks.
