imbabwe wants to diversify its export portfolio to China
Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to diversify its export portfolio to China, according to
ZimTrade's Chief Executive Officer Allan Majuru. In a recent interview, Majuru highlighted the
positive trajectory of trade between Zimbabwe and China, emphasizing the strategic partnership
in exports and imports. Zimbabwe, known for its exports of tobacco and minerals to China, is
expanding into horticulture, with a notable increase in agricultural exports, including the
inaugural citrus exports to China last year.
Majuru detailed the recent achievements in exporting over 40 containers of citrus to China
and mentioned ongoing discussions for avocado exports. The aim is to broaden the export
basket with products like blueberries, pecan nuts, chilies, and sesame. ZimTrade is
collaborating with Chinese authorities to facilitate this diversification and to assist Zimbabwean
businesses in adhering to Chinese import regulations and standards.
The bilateral trade volume reached a record 3.12 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, marking a 29.9
percent increase from the previous year, with Zimbabwe enjoying a trade surplus.
