regions in Korea and are pests of various crops and ornamentals in greenhouses. In
particular,theycausedirectfeedingdamageontomatoesandarealsooftenimplicatedin
virus transmission. Pealius azaleae (Baker and Moles) has frequently been found on
azalea plants. Other species, Dialeurodes citri (Ashmead) and Aleuroclava aucubae
(Kuwana), are common on citrus and other ornamental plantings, but are generally not
problematic, with natural enemies such as parasitoids or predators keeping them below
theeconomicthreshold.
Diagnosisandcomparisonwithotherfamilies
Adultsaresmall (1?3mm inlength),and thepupariaareusuallyovalto round,rarely
elongateelliptical.Theidentifiablestageofwhitefliesisthe4thinstarnymph,alsoknown
asthepupaorpuparium.Rarelyhavewebeenabletoidentifyadultwhitefliesassociated
withinterceptedplantmaterialbeyondtheleveloffamilyorsubfamily.Thetaxonomyof
adult whiteflies is poorly understood, and the adults of very few species have been
characterized. Whiteflies differ from all other families of insects by the presence of the
vasiformorifice,whichislocatedinthemedialregiononthedorsumofthe8thabdominal
segment (present in both adults and nymphs). In addition, whiteflies have 2?segmented
