Abstract：
Purpose
Antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) in feed have been phasing out in Korea since 2004.
To prevent abuse of them, Korean Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Forestry & Fisheries
(MIFAFF) prohibited 2 tetracyclines and 5 antimicrobials(bacitracin zinc, colistin sulfate,
lincomycin hydrochloride, neomycine sulfate, and penicillin) added at feed mills in January
2009. Among them, the former had been occupied almost half of AGPs used in Korea. And
the latter had been used as important AGPs. This study was conducted to determine the
changes of veterinary antimicrobials’ use after termination of those seven important AGPs
and to give information for the further consideration and improvement of the ongoing AGP
termination policy in Korea.
Materials & Methods
Usage data on AGPs and therapeutic antimicrobials in animals in the present study are
estimated based on national aggregated sales figures in recent five years. These data have
been collected from pharmaceutical industry electronically by Korean Animal Health Products
Association (KAHPA). We compared amounts of all veterinary antimicrobials used as AGPs
and antimicrobial therapeutics according to four animal categories, chickens, pigs, cattle and
fishes, from 2005 to 2009.
Results
The ban of seven AGPs caused to increase usage of some remaining AGPs. Two tetracylines
were partially replaced with two macrolides, tylosin phosphate and tiamulin. The prohibition
of five AGPs led to a sharp increase of bacitracin m ethylendisalicylate, apramycin sulfate,
enramycine, virginiamycin as AGPs. And the overall sales of macrolides and polypeptides and
the use of therapeutic antimicrobials in pigs and cattle were slightly increased subsequent to
