Surveillance activities conducted since the first outbreak in April was effective in quickly
identifying new infections and finding sub-clinical infections. The last infected farm was
confirmed on 15 May during testing of pre-emptively culled farms, and no evidence of HPAI
infection has been demonstrated in domestic poultry since. The surveillance results support the
view that Republic of Korea is free from HPAI.
Conclusion
In the Republic of Korea, stamping out policy was applied to all poultry in the affected
farms and disinfection of the last affected farm was completed on 15 May with no additional
case thereafter.
In accordance with Article 2.7.12.3 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, the Republic of
Korea declares that it has met the requirements for recognition as a country free from highly
pathogenic avian influenza as15 August 2008.
