Abstract :
Introduction
Rabies is highly neurotropic and zoonotic disease in the infected warm-blooded animals
caused by rabies virus(RABV) belonging to a one serotype of the genus Lyssavirus. In
South Korea, the rabies outbreak area has been expanded in the direction of
southwest beyond Han river, since the recurrence of sylavatic rabies in northern part
of Gangwon province in 1993. The rabies outbreaks were the first case since two
successive cases in Gimpo city located at northwestern Gyeonggi province in 2005.
The aim of this study is to provide epidemiological informations on the 2012 cases of
rabies in Hwa-seong and Su-won city where rabies has been little concerns and people
are densely populated. Epidemiological investigation of possible routes of rabies
introduction is integral to conduct disease control policies that prevent rabies from
reoccurring.
Materials and Methods
Decomposed dead German Shepherd and brain tissues of Korean breeds Poongsan
were submitted for a thorough inspection at the Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine
and Inspection Agency on 6th April and on 13th April, respectively. Fluorescent
antibody test and mouse inoculation test were carried out using the each brain tissue,
as described(OIE, 2011). In order to investigate the circumstances of outbreaks, a series
of investigation was conducted : survey of involved people, geographical features of
the region, examination of the scene, distribution of dog meat, etc. As the molecular
epidemiological analysis based on glycoprotein gene of two isolates revealed closely
related to one isolate in 2009 from Goseong-Gun in Gangwon province. This finding
led to investigate meat dog farms, veterinary clinics, animal hunting center, Seoraksan
national park in northeastern Gangwon province.
