The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) has assumed more and more responsibilities and tasks in response
to new demands: increasing risks of major animal disease outbreaks, global spread and entry of high-risk plant pests,
persistentoutbreaksofemergingandvariantanimaldiseases,thegrowingdemandforresearchtoresolveproblemsinthe
field,andrisingpeople’sexpectationsforthesafetyofanimalsandlivestockproducts.
Lastyear,twoserotypes(typeAandO)ofFMDoccurredsimultaneously,H5N6andH5N8HPAIviruseswerecontinuously
detectedinchickensandducks,andredimportedfireantswerefoundforthefirsttimeinKorea.Evenintheseadverse
circumstances,theAPQAhasproducedsatisfactoryoutcomesbasedonitsaccumulatedexpertiseandresponsibility.
