The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the Department) today
released its final risk analysis report for the release of the rust fungus Puccinia
spegazziniiforthebiologicalcontroloftheweedMikaniamicrantha.
HeadofBiosecurityattheDepartment,MsLynO¡¯Connell,saidMikaniamicranthamore
commonlyknownasthemile-a-minuteweed,isaseriouspestofagriculturalcropsand
commercialforestsinothercountries.
¡°ThereleaseofabiologicalcontrolagentinAustraliawillhelptopreventthisoccurring
inAustralia,¡±MsO¡¯Connellsaid.
¡°The weed is also an environmental risk, threatening World Heritage forests in North
Queenslandandsmotheringnativevegetation.
¡°The final report recommends that the rust pathogen Puccinia spegazzinii should be
released,subjecttostandardbiosecurityconditionsassociatedwiththeimportandrelease
ofbiologicalcontrolagents.
¡°Duetothemile-a-minuteweed¡¯sinvasivenatureithasspreadthroughoutcountriesin
AsiaandthePacific,andisdifficultandcostlytocontrolusingmechanicalmethodsor
herbicides.
¡°CurrentlytheweedisonlypresentinQueensland,howeverduetothepotentialthreatit
poses to the Australian environment it is the target of a nationally cost-shared
eradicationprogram.¡±

programs in Australia under the Rural R&D for Profit Programme New biocontrol
solutionsforsustainablemanagementofweedimpactstoagriculturalprofitability.
