Alert for suburban gardeners amid outbreaks of hugely damaging
bunchytopbananadisease
Backyardbananagrowersinsouth-eastQueenslandandnorthernNewSouthWaleshave
been urged to stay alert for one of the world's most damaging banana diseases after
dozensofoutbreaks.
TheAustralianBananaGrowers' Councilhasrespondedtohundredsofreportsofbunchy
top, which almost wiped out the crop in northern NSW and southern Queensland last
century.
Bunchytopappearsinhomegardensaswellascommercialcropsandisrapidlyspread
byaphidsorthemovementofinfectedplants.
The disease enteredAustralia from Fijiin1903 via infectedplanting materialandsoon
wipedout16,000hectaresofplantations.
Manyofthosegrowersneverreplanted.
"Itvirtuallydestroyedtheindustrydownhereinthe1920sand'30suntiltheyfoundout
whatcauseditandhowitspread,"theBananaGrowers' Council'snationalbunchytop
projectmanager,DavidPeasley,said.
The council runs the national detection and management program funded by grower
leviesthroughHorticultureInnovationAustralia.
Professionally trained inspectors have helped stop the aphid spreading outside a control
areabetweenLismoreandtheSunshineCoast.
ButthevirushasneverbeeneradicatedandMrPeasleywarnsitremainsamajorthreat
toAustralia'scommercialbananaindustry.
"Ifitgotupnorth,you'dhavenoindustryintwoyearsandthenumbersofinfections
havebeenincreasinginthebackyardsofsoutheastQueenslandforthelasttwoorthree
years,"MrPeasleysaid.
"Fiveorsixyearsagoitwasundercontrol,butitisgettingawayagain.Wewantto
containitandgettingthecommunityonsideistheonlywaywe'lldoit.
"We've picked up at least 200 to 300 reports now of bunchy top and we've gone and
inspectedthemanddestroyedtheplantsortoldpeoplehowtodoitiftheywanttodoit
themselves."
The virus causes newly emerging banana leaves to have a bunched appearance, with
dot-dashfleckingofleavesandstemsheaths.Infectedplantsrarelyproducefruit.
To stoppeople unintentionally spreading the virus by giving away young plants, called
suckers, to neighbours and friends, there is a prohibition on planting material being
