- Abstract -
· During 2010∼2011, Foot-and-mouth Disease (FMD) broke out in Korea and around 3.5 million livestock were
killed for disease control purpose. The media reported that some local government buried live pigs, and it formed
critical public opinion. This study was carried out to development the humane and effective pig killing system for
disease control purpose. World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) recognizes ‘free bullet’, ‘captive bolt ‘,
‘electrical’, ‘gas (carbon dioxide, nitrogen, inert gas, etc)’ and ‘lethal injection’ as humane methods for killing pigs.
By the consideration of domestic reality, ‘electrical’ is thought to be the most appropriate method. For the efficiency
of killing, the system should work automatically and could be moved or towed. The system would be use sin-
gle-phase 220V that is used in most livestock farm in Korea as input voltage. Output voltage and current should be
adjusted as minimum 220V and 1.3A. The current should be applied to pig’s head for a minimum 3 seconds. To
move the killed pigs on the transport truck, the module should have conveyer belt system. These conditions would

be reflected for making pilot module at 2
year, but the evaluation committee decided that this study would be quit

at 1
year. Because this study is too important and big to perform by QIA alone. But this study will be tried to
carry out by government-university-industry joint research for the near future.
