29-2021: Upcoming changes to on-arrival inspections of bulbs for use

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the department) is revising
theon-arrivalinspectionregimeofallconsignmentsofbulbsimportedforuseasnursery
stock.
Followingareviewofimportconditions,a 600-unitsamplingandinspectionmethodology
isbeingimplementedforimportedbulbson1April2021.Thesamplingsizeisdependent
onthenumberofindividualbulbsofeachgenusasperthefollowingtable:
The inspection regime will apply for each genus per phytosanitary certificate, and will
include:
a representative sample being drawn from a minimum of 10 crates per genus per
phytosanitarycertificate
samplingfromallcultivars/varieties
fullyemptyingthreeoftheselectedcratestodetectthepresenceofdebris/trash.
Theadoptionofsample-basedinspectionregimesforon-arrivalinspectionsissupportedby
international standards developed for use by National Plant Protection Organisations
(NPPOs). This methodology is consistent with existing practices in place for other
commoditiesandisbeingimplementedtoensurebiosecurityrisksareeffectivelymanaged.
Importers are advised that if biosecurity risks are detected, departmental officers reserve
the right to undertake further sampling and inspection of consignments as required in
determininganyfurtheractions.
