IntheEPPOregion,SolanumviarumwasrecentlyreportedintheSouthofFrance.Thefirst
discoverywasmadeinSeptember2018byanamateurbotanistandthenindependentlyin2019by
theauthorsofthecurrentpublication.SolanumviarumwasdiscoveredintheGorgesduGardona
littlewaydownstreamfromtheregionalnaturereserve(Garddepartment). InFebruary2019,
approximately21individualscovering20m2wererecordedinsemi-shade,attheedgeofaholm
oak(Quercusilex)forestdominatedbythefloweringvineSmilaxaspera.TheSolanumviarum
plantshadfruitsatvaryingstagesofmaturityandwinterfrostsdidnotappeartohaveaffected
theplants.S.viarumisnativetoSouthAmericaandisaninvasivealienspeciesinAsia,North
andCentralAmericaandSouthAfrica. Itproducesthousandsofseedsperplantthataredispersed
bysmallmammalsandlivestock. Throughoutitsinvasiverange,S.viarumhasanumberof
negativeimpactsincludingformingdensemonospecificstandsthatoutcompetenativeplantspecies.
Inaddition,itcaninvadepastures,plantationsandagriculturalfields.
