andhowthatcouldbeusedtocontrolthem.
DrEtebarisaiditwasimportantforAustraliatohelpitsPacificneighbourstotacklethe
pest,notjustforeconomicreasons,butalsohumanitarian.
"It'saseriousthreattolivelihoodsacrossthePacificislandsasthecoconuttreeprovides
essential resources like food, copra, building material, and the coastal protection for more
thanfivemillionvulnerablepeople,"hesaid.
ADepartmentofAgriculture,WaterandtheEnvironmentspokespersonsaiditwasworking
withbiosecuritycounterpartsinPNGandSolomonIslandstotrackandmonitorthespread
ofthenewbeetlestrain.
ThedepartmentwasalsoactivelymonitoringthespreadofthebeetlestrainsthroughPNG,
particularly in the Western Province and PNG Treaty Village areas bordering Australia's
northernTorresStraitIslands.
The spokesperson said the department was also supporting regional initiatives that were
dealingwiththecoconutrhinocerosbeetle.
