Congratulatory Message of the Commissioner
It's autumn, and now the heat has gone and a cool breeze is blowing. Although we greet
autumn every year, the autumn of 2022 in particular has a special meaning for us.
The Veterinary Epidemiology Division marks the 20th anniversary of its establishment in
2002 at the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service, which was the
predecessor of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA). In the meantime, the
Veterinary Epidemiology Division has put much effort into realizing field-oriented scientific
outbreak investigations.
One of them is the International Workshop on Veterinary Epidemiology, to identify the latest
trends in veterinary epidemiology and exchange information with experts around the world.
It has been promoted every year since 2013 and celebrated its 10th year in 2002.
In 2022, the training course for epidemiological investigators, which is mandatory in the
Act on the Prevention of Contagious Animal Diseases, was launched, laying the foundation
for the stable strengthening of capabilities of the outbreak investigations.
With the development of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence and big data,
we are living in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution in which various technological fields
are converging. Preparations for the 5th Industrial Revolution are also being made. Outbreak
investigation should also go along with this.
The theme of the 10th International Workshop on Veterinary Epidemiology in 2022 is
¡®Understanding Livestock Smart Farm for Animal Disease Outbreak Investigation'. It is
intended to utilize field data from smart farms in Korea that pursue sustainable improvement
of productivity in outbreak investigations.
The theme of the 10th International Workshop on Veterinary Epidemiology in 2022 is
¡°Understanding of Livestock Smart Farms for Animal Disease Outbreak Investigation¡±. It
is intended to utilize field data from smart farms in Korea that pursue the sustainable
improvement of productivity in outbreak investigations.
Breaking away from the former configuration that focused on lectures by foreign experts,
this workshop consists of K-contents prepared by experts on livestock in Korea and the
Veterinary Epidemiology Division of the APQA, domestic livestock experts, and the
Epidemiologic Investigation Department. It is expected to be an opportunity to provide
information from the field to those who work in animal health in Korea and other countries,
and to promote the veterinary epidemiology of Korea.
This workshop is held in the Metaverse space for the first time in the veterinary field of
Korea. I would like to conclude my greetings in wishing that you freely communicate and
enjoy the event by visiting the Metaverse space of the 2022 International Workshop on
Veterinary Epidemiology.
September 2022
Bong-kyun Park, Commissioner
