South Korea is a global grain importer, relying on imports of all
major grains except rice. There were 63,863 quarantine cases of
imported cereal grains such as wheat, rice, barley, oats, and rye
(1996?2023), with the majority of these imported cereal grains
coming from a small number of countries, mainly the United
States,Australia,andChina(PIS2024).
Recently, due to climate warming and increased international
trade in agricultural products, 54 different stored grain pests (48
Coleopteraspeciesand6Lepidopteraspecies)havebeendetected
at quarantine sites, of which 14 are quarantine pests. Rapid and
accurate taxonomic identification of Coleoptera species with a high
detection rates compared to other pests is required. However,
many of these stored Coleoptera grain pests have similar external
morphologies,makingitdifficulttodistinguishbetweenspecies.
In particular, some quarantine pests are morphologically similar
to domestic species; thus, the possibility of missing the initial
response to quarantine pests cannot be ruled out, and the number
of frontline field insect pest taxonomic identification experts is
gradually decreasing. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency
(APQA) is also facing difficulties in securing workforce, such as by
