Farmers from Quneitra province have reported that olive knot has affected some of their trees,
leading to losses in their crop. Olive knot is a new disease affecting southern Syria.
A farmer reported last year [2023] the spread of the disease, which struck a large portion of his
trees. Another farmer in northern Quneitra said that the yield from his olive trees decreased this
year [2024] due to olive knot, as the fruits dropped before ripening. He started harvesting early
this season, but production declined to less than half compared to last year [2023]. He could not
address the disease because he did not know any treatments
A local agricultural engineer says that removing and burning an affected tree if it is small is
essential if the disease has spread to different parts of it, and it is important to sterilise the site
before replanting a new sapling. He says to treat trees by removing affected parts and applying
copper sulfate to the areas of the knots, as well as spraying pesticides, especially those containing
copper sulfate.
[Olive knot is a potentially serious disease caused by the bacterium _Pseudomonas savastanoi_.
Symptoms include rough galls of variable size on any organ of the plant. These grow rapidly and
are most common on young branches but will also form around wounds on the main trunk and on
damaged leaves. The disease reduces yield by girdling branches and causing dieback; young trees
may be killed if trunks are girdled.
The bacteria enter the host through wounds and live in the galls; they ooze out in wet weather.
Infection occurs at low temperatures, but time from infection to galling can vary from a week to
several months, depending on environmental conditions. The disease is spread with infected plant
and other material (including contaminated cutting tools), by water and mechanical means. All
commercial olive cultivars are susceptible.
Disease management mostly includes pathogen exclusion, reducing inoculum levels by removal of
galls, phytosanitation (for example disinfection of pruning equipment) and preventative copper
treatment of all types of wounds. Spraying 'pesticides' alone will not be sufficient to prevent
spread of the disease.
